How to Write an Essay - Write Like You Know What Youre Doing
How to Write an Essay - Write Like You Know What You're DoingFirst time Ielts students often ask me if they can write a Cause and Effect Essay. My answer is always the same - 'Yes, but only if you know what you are doing.'Let me give you a couple of examples. When students first show up for IELTS, most of them start asking me how to write an essay. To some extent, it's understandable. Students are eager to learn how to succeed in the world of higher education. They want to be able to write on a subject that has influenced them. So they try to find out how to do this. The true start to understanding how to write an essay begins with knowing what you are talking about. Knowing what you are talking about is often the best way to comprehend what you are writing about. Without a knowledge of what you are writing about, you are not going to understand what you are writing about. Without understanding, you cannot really write an essay. The reason why you need to know what you are talking about is because the IELTS exam is written like a movie. Each statement is presented as an individual scene. Students are given a question to solve and an answer to the problem that they have just been given. And one thing you need to know about solving problems is that the answer that you provide usually corresponds to what happened after the fact. What you provided happened after the other happened. For instance, when students are asked how to write an essay, they should write the sentence 'While studying English Literature at a local school, I went to an event called 'Can You Make Sense of This?' '.If you don't know what that means, let me help you out with an example. When reading the question, you should know that you first heard about the event 'Can You Make Sense of This?' which was held in the town where you live. After being introduced to the event, you went to a public library where you could find a book about English Literature. After having finished reading the book, you went t o the town hall where you could hear an event organizer to explain why the event was being held. At the end of the event, a man who had once attended the event explained to you that the event had been held because of a song.
